Julia Dawn: Bio

Julia Dawn

There have been innumerable attempts to classify the music of Julia Dawn. Some have said, "folk," "singer/songwriter," others have called it "jazz," or "alternative;" however, there will be no such assertions here. Attempting to attribute any label to something so metamorphic and fluid is a contradiction to the very purpose of Julia's sound. It is only those who are stale, stagnant, and unchanging, who can remain still enough to be pigeonholed.

But Julia is anything but the aforementioned. In fact, her
last EP, "Falling" (2007), was inspired solely by change, and in it you can virtually hear her spirit unraveling in the very instant that you press play. Prior to "Falling," she released her debut album entitled, "The Book of Good Intentions," a self-published and co-produced album that makes the hard truth seem comforting, and replaces everything cliché and artificial about music with what's real and visceral -- the perfect prelude for a pioneer.

After the release of two profound CDs and a full-fledged tour across nine different states, Julia's fan-base is vast. She has intrigued thousands of people, and has allured many more, specifically, in the Northwest, and Central and Northern California. Certainly, it is something about the combination of Julia's eclectic guitar riffs and raw lyrics that audiences find most marveling.

With such candor, Julia makes music feel palpable again; not another magnetic wave omitted from some distant radio station. She's more like the voice of a neighbor resonating through the wind, or the pages of your sister's diary left open. Julia's songs are secrets whispered on the wires strung by guitars, and we're just lucky enough to listen.

Not that Julia's music can rightfully be contained, but some venues have tried; most notably, the legendary Fillmore of San Francisco, the reputable Club Congress of Tuscan, AZ, and the lively Starry Plough of Berkeley, CA. Undoubtedly, these are just a few of the many stages that Julia will ignite.

In future contexts, Julia Dawn will be releasing a third album in March of 2009. Until then, you can find her on the play-lists of Portland's Kink Radio, indie stream radio, and various podcasts. And if you ever need to acquire more information, just type into any search engine "a genre of a new generation" and there she'll be. ~ Deanna Pierro
